John Liu has extensive experience in general corporate matters, intellectual property transactions and private equity financings. Currently, John is the U.S. corporate counsel to numerous US and offshore private equity and emerging growth companies. His intellectual property practice includes trademark applications, licensing agreements, distribution agreements, and the transfer of trademarks, patents, copyrights and other intellectual property rights. He has represented clients on corporate, intellectual property and commercial transactions involving foreign jurisdictions such as the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the People's Republic of China. In addition, John previously represented AltiGen Communications, Inc., UTStarcom, Inc., Broadmedia, Inc. and Integrated Telecom Express, Inc. in connection with their respective initial public offerings.
John received his Juris Doctor from the University of California at Davis, his Masters of Science in Engineering Economic Systems, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, and Bachelor of Arts in English from Stanford University. Prior to founding Charter Law Group, John practiced at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto, California and at Brobeck Phleger & Harrison in Irvine, California. John is a member of the California bar and is admitted to practice with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Prior to his legal career, John spent 10 years as a software engineer and consultant for companies including Oracle Corporation and Transamerica Life Insurance Companies.

He also represents start-up and emerging growth companies in both the U.S. and Asia on a broad range of business and intellectual property matters including employment matters, OEM and distribution agreements, joint ventures, licensing and intellectual property transactions. In also represents private investment companies in their formation, offering of interests and investments.

In received his Juris Doctor from the Columbia University School of Law where he was one of the managing editors of the Journal of Transnational Law, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to joining Charter Law Group, In practiced at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto, California and at Clifford Chance Rogers & Wells in New York, New York.
